Review of Winning the War on Cancer
Mirko Beljanski is a microbiologist with a great passion for finding cures for chronic diseases. He dedicated his life to researching alternate cures for cancer aside from the traditional methods of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Using extracts from two plants, Pao pareira, a tree native to the Amazon, and Rauwolfia vomitoria, an African root bark, he is able to develop a herbal supplement that cures cancer. His medicine was used to cure the French President at the time, Francois Mitterand, who was suffering from pancreatic cancer. However, this breakthrough does not go down well with the oncology community. Mirko's work is discredited, and he gets arrested.
Sylvia Beljanski, the daughter of Mirko, vows to continue her father’s research and clear his name. She starts her foundation to promote the research of alternative cures for cancer. Will she be successful? Read Winning the War on Cancer: The Epic Journey Towards a Natural Cure by Sylvie Beljanski to find out.
There were many positive aspects of this book. Personally, I didn’t know much about cancer or its treatments until I read this book. I understood why they didn’t support Mirko's research at the beginning. It was because they made more money manufacturing the orthodox drugs for cancer. Herbal medicine may be effective, but it’s not profitable for them. I commend the resilience of Sylvie in running her foundation and trying to keep her father’s legacy alive. In her quest to find the plants for her supplements, she traveled from France to French Guiana and up to Brazil, where she found an abundant stash of the exotic plants.
The book was well written. Even though it talked about complex scientific terms, the author was able to simplify them for the understanding of the layman. I did not find the book difficult to understand. Also, the book was well researched. It has scientific research from universities and laboratories. Also, published articles by experts in the field were incorporated into the book. Sylvia is also clear on the point that her treatment is complementary to other traditional treatments for cancer. It doesn’t replace it. This is necessary to avoid confusion for any patient.
I found no negative aspects of this book. The book was professionally well edited, I found only a few errors. I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. This rating is because of how educational this book was to me. I recommend it to cancer researchers and medical practitioners who want to introduce integrative medicine into their treatment of cancer.
