Have you ever read a book that could be good if major changes happen? This book, “Behind Closed Doors, “by A. L. Smith is about four women that went through a traumatic experience during their childhood. The book describes how these experiences effected their adulthood and how they overcame it. The book took directions on all the women. It gave each women their perspective on what happened and how they dealt with it. The story does connects for how these traumatic experiences occur. That is the one good thing I can say about this book.

Again, the story was sad. I felt sorry for these women. However, I did not like any of the characters. I did not cry or cheer with any characters. The reasons I could not bound with these characters was the heavy expressions of Ebonics, racism, and bad grammar. With me having dyslexia, learning disability, and a lisp even I can tell that the grammar is bad. With bad grammar, it makes the book harder to appreciate.

I had no favorite part of the book. The book need to get rid of the Ebonics, hate, and racism. I understand racism is a hot topic in today society. Before anyone start pointing the racist finger, I am mix GOP gal. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Lastly, this book concept of healing is not correct.

Yes, healing is different for everyone. One of the important concepts of healing is forgiveness. Many sexual survivors would disagree on this. The reason is that many sexual survivors will tell you it their decision on when to heal. This book does not make a strong connection of the perils of holding on to anger. Instead, the book gives a fairy tale image of healing. With twelve plus years in domestic abuse relationships, volunteering at a domestic and sexual abuse shelter, a friend murder from domestic abuse, and other journeys with the paths of the criminal justice field, I have a grip on this topic. I do not have a degree in this matter. My degree is for something else. Regardless of degrees, personal experience can give a strong learning experience.

This is a book that might be helpful for women dealing with traumatic events, however changes have to happen to make this book helpful. That is why I give this book a 2 out of 4. The author seems to forget Dr. Martin Luther King Jr who was a civil rights activist. If the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr could be seen in this book, it will erase the racism and hate. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”? Martin Luther King Jr.
