Have you ever wondered what would happen if you took a hillbilly cannibal and tossed her onto a squad of cheerleaders? Tiffany Drake tells us exactly what happens in her new novel, Cannibal Cheerleader, which is very easily the funniest book I have read in years. Imagine Encino Man combined with Bring It On, told with the silly, satirical voice of Scary Movie. Combine those all together with lots of gore and laugh-out-loud moments, top it all off with great writing, and you’re left with one amazing young adult book for those who love comedy combined with horror.

When an inbred, hillbilly family’s home is destroyed by a revenge-seeking victim of their cruel treatment, only one girl survives the massacre. She is found by a group of drunken cheerleaders, who take pity on her and cluelessly attempt to clean her up so that she can use her athletic prowess to join their cheerleading squad. They soon discover that she is a cannibal with a knack for hunting and killing; she earned the name Chase due to her skills in chasing down her prey. The cheerleaders remain determined to civilize Chase and make her a part of their squad. Chase wants to join the squad, but she still has a lot to learn in order to fit in: proper eating and manners, going to school, and socializing, all on top of evading the cops who are close to tracking her down.

I don’t know how many times I can say it: this book is hilarious. The pages are filled with lots of blood, guts, and gore, so this book is not meant for squeamish readers, but I personally found it much more humorous than disgusting. Death scenes are outrageous and over-the-top, but in an entertaining and enjoyable way that had me slapping my knee with laughter at the sheer originality of it all. I can safely say that I have never read anything like this before, and uniqueness of this sort in today’s literary world is indeed a rare quality.

At roughly 100 pages in length, this book flies by and is over before you know it. The flawless writing and gripping (and did I mention hilarious?) story only assists in making this a fast-paced page-turner that is impossible to put down. Fortunately, there is a sequel on the way, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author, whose twisted sense of humor certainly matches what I am looking for in modern books. For me personally, I can think of nothing negative to say about this book; however, I could understand that other readers might find the tale a bit juvenile due to its overly sarcastic portrayal of the characters and the lack of realism in many of the events depicted in the book.

I gladly give Cannibal Cheerleader a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. This book had me hooked from the moment I read the title, and the content did not disappoint at all. I’d like to see more books of this genre available to readers. It’s definitely different from the serious tales of magic and fantasy that seem to be lining the shelves of modern bookstores, and it’s certainly a breath of fresh air for young adult fiction lovers like me.

This book sounds incredibly unique! The Title threw me at first, neither cannibals or cheerleaders are really my thing. But with this recomendation, I might just have to read it.
