Solaris Seethes is an action filled Young Adult skewed Science Fiction book by Janet McNutly. The series contains a total of four books, Solaris Seethes being the first.

Solaris Seethes is about Rynah and her unlikely crew mates. Rynah escaped the destruction of her home planet by the skin of her teeth using her father's ship, and is out for revenge. But, her father’s ship is more than just a normal ship. It has a fully functional Artificial Intelligence system on it, names Solaris. Solaris tells her about ancient legends that will stop the man that caused her planet’s destruction from destroying more planets. Rynah puts all of her faith in the legends. Calling upon four unlikely heroes from an unknown planet, one philosopher, one warrior, one lover, and one inventor, Rynah, Solaris, and the crew embark on an adventure that will shock each and everyone of them.

My rating for this book is 3 out of 4 stars.

I would give this book 2.5 stars if given the option, and here is why. The book is aimed for a young-adult audience, but definitely stands as a strong space adventure. But that’s all it is, a space adventure. The characters have little to no development, and the main character does not seem to have the ability to be rational. Her character only seems to evolve at the end of the book. The other characters, barely evolve at all. There does seem to be a moral message (accept everyone for who they are, even if their helpful abilities seem unknown at present), but it is only addressed with a limited amount of the characters.

The four heroes are each from different time periods. When they arrive on the futuristic spaceship, which they have seen nothing like, it takes them no time at all to be comfortable. Yes, some of them are homesick. But some (mostly the ones that have not seen technology in their respective time period yet) act completely normal, like their life has not been turned around.

The only reason I pushed this review up to 3 stars instead of down to 2 is the writing. It is written in third person omniscient (you get to hear the thoughts and feelings of every character, even the spaceship). Third person omniscient is very hit or miss. Most of the time, in my experience, it is very hard to tell which character is thinking at what time. And if it is easy to tell, terms like “he thought,” “she thought,” and “ x character thought,” are overused. Not in Solaris Seethes. Solaris Seethes manages to get into the minds of every character, without repetition of the before mentioned phrases. You get the sense you are there as every character, including the minor characters.

Overall, Solaris Seethes is a fun space adventure aimed for teens, but adults will most-likely enjoy the books as well. If you are looking for a deep and emotional story, this is not for you. But if you are looking for a good, well thought out science fiction book that starts the action from the start and doesn’t stop, then this is definitely a good choice.
