The novel My Trip to Adele, by R. I. Alyaseer and A. I. Alyaseer, is a rich and heartwarming tale that delves into the complexities of love and breaking free from the shackles that hold us back. The story revolves around three complex characters whose sole connection is their love for Adele and their desire to go see her recent concert. None of these characters are without flaws, but they are good natured and believable.
The first of these individuals is a man named Elias. He grew up in Morocco, but has currently been living in Rome. After a long a time, he decides to go back to Morocco based on something he hears from a seer in the streets. This journey takes him back into the past he has tried to put away for years. His memories of his love for Malika from back when he was in Morocco are revived once again with a renewed sense of purpose to find out what truly happened between them all those years ago.
Another one of these individuals is Yaser, who is a married man living in Vegas. He and his wife are Muslims by name, but at heart only his wife has unwavering faith. As he struggles with faith and his relationship with his wife, he must come to terms with what his deepest desire is. He must decide how he wants to resolve the situation he is in.
Lastly, there is Nadia from Jordan. Recently, she split from her husband while taking her only son to live with her far from her ex-husband. Being a single mother and a woman in society that is mostly a patriarchy, she must fight everyday with society to exercise her rights and freedoms to live life the way she wants. She too, must decide how far she will go to get what she wants and what sacrifices she must make for those wishes to come true.
As these three unique individuals go tumultuous ride to find, not their perfect ending, but one that is as perfect as they can hope for in an imperfect world; they find many of their expectations broken. The truths about love, life, religion, and our decisions make them rethink their lives and come to terms with it in the best way possible.
These three stories address the different struggles people go through everyday around the world. The struggle Nadia goes through as a single mom, makes brings light to the struggles women who have become single go through. It brings expresses another perspective to love and how a person can be happy single with their children. The struggles Yaser has in his life show that even if a marriage looks perfect from the outside on the inside this is not always the case. A happy couple goes through many stages, compromises, and struggles to get to an almost perfect and happy lifestyle. Finally, Elias’s story does a good job expressing how some love isn’t for marriage or relationships. It can be deep and pure, but that does not mean those two people should have some sort of relationship. Sometimes love has other forms and can be just as meaningful without attaining it in the typical manner.
The reality and truth in these stories is what made the book such an inspiring read. I think the book would have been even better if the authors were to have given more perspective on the supporting characters. Learning about Yaser’s wife and Malika in more detail from another perspective would have been much more insightful. The reader learns about these characters through Elias and Yaser but they don’t get to see them for who they are aside from their lover’s perspective. If another perspective was given the struggles these people go through would be more clear because the reader would also be seeing what in each person’s personality causes the trouble. Because of this, I would rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars.
Overall, the book was very well written. It did a nice job bringing to life three similar but different cultures. Each individual character’s story was meaningful and inspiring. The authors do a great job bringing many struggles to light in an average person’s life. They put forth three different stories that express the different ways people can struggle to find their end goal of peace and happiness.
