Review of Nine Months
When Tania and her husband decided to welcome Wilbur into their home, they did not know how heavily the cute dog would affect their lives. Wilbur had recently been rescued from the streets of Pasadena by an animal shelter. Even though it seemed that Tania was not going to get used to Wilbur when he initially arrived, the turn of events had me melting into tears.
Tania's friend Becky knew of a scruffy dog who bore a striking resemblance to Tania and her husband's beloved dog, Hank. Despite a severely injured eye requiring surgery, the good-natured pup quickly won over the shelter employees. Though initially excited to bring Wilbur home after a long adoption process, Tania's expectations were upended from the very first night with their new house guest. Wilbur disrupted the entire household with incessant, thunderous snores as he fell asleep. A disheartened Tania cried herself to sleep that night, upset that her envisioned perfect pet was exhibiting problematic health issues they weren't prepared for. Did they solve this health issue? What became of Wilbur? Get a copy of Nine Months: The Story of Wilbur by Tania Tomyn to find out.
As Tania falls helplessly in love with this quirky yet fragile dog over their short time together, his deteriorating medical condition introduces wrenching grief and worries. I empathize with Tania's all-consuming desire to ease her loyal companion's suffering through the proposed surgery, despite the overwhelming costs and risks. Beyond the touching subject matter, Tomyn's prose is equally gripping. Stylistically polished without losing raw intimacy, this book has the binge-worthy pace of a page-turner. Seamless editing allows full immersion into each laugh, tear, and unforgettable life lesson Wilbur's journey imparts. This rare work transforms pet parents' daily tribulations into a profound opportunity for growth and meaning.
As painful as letting go can be, I learned that the ultimate act of devotion is to champion our companion's best interests above our own selflessness. For any dog lover who has opened their home and heart to a rescue animal, Tania Tomyn's memoir Nine Months: The Story of Wilbur rings powerfully true. I recommend the book for pet parents navigating the emotional feats of responsible adoption and steadfast commitment to a pet's well-being.
While Tomyn's book charts the deepening bond between one woman and her newly adopted dog, Wilbur's story of overcoming adversity will speak to the universal experience of the pets in our lives becoming beloved families. We relish and endure every milestone and setback right alongside them. There were no negative aspects to this book; hence, I am rating it 5 out of 5 stars
