Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is a Sci-fi/fantasy novel that takes place throughout the universe. After an event that leaves Rynah’s home planet of Lanyr devastated she escapes on Solaris, a space craft left to her by her late grandfather. Betrayed and confused Rynah quickly learns an obsession of her grandfathers, an ancient prophecy, is much more than old folklore. With the help of Solaris, four unlikely comrades are brought on board to help complete the mission left by the prophecy. From different times and different planets the five comrades must learn to work together and respect each other’s strengths and weaknesses to complete the mission. The mission has the team working to gather crystals that when combined can be used to create an all powerful weapon that could be used for both good and bad. Learning to work as a team and understand the riddle like prophecy would be a task enough but they are also racing against Klanor who has just betrayed Rynah.
The thing I found most interesting about this book was the way McNulty not only brought to life characters from different times and planets but also how so many different themes were entwined in the story. Mystery, friendship, trust, courage, and so much more are all tied into the first book of the Solaris Saga. The ending also left me fully engaged in the story and excited to read the rest of the series. For this reason I rated this book 3 out of 4 stars.
Another reason I rated the book at 3 stars was the ability of McNulty to cover a wide range of ideas and bring them together into one work. From the different planets of ice, sand and jungle to the space pirates and carnivorous plants McNulty keeps the readers imaginations engaged and the plot moving. The plot had a fairly consistent level of excitement and always kept the reader looking forward to coming back to the book.
I did not rate the book at 4 starts because although I liked the writing style the author could have used more attention to consistency when describing characters and places. I also would have liked to see a couple more hints for the content of the second book in the series. The ending leaves you wanting more but it would have been nice to have an idea of where the second book would pick up the plot at.
Overall, I found the book enjoyable and look forward to reading the rest of the series. Anyone who is willing to use some imagination and looking for a fun and exciting read would enjoy this book. The main audience of this series may be for those in the teenage years, but anyone who enjoys sci-fi or mystery and is willing to imagine the unknown would find the book entertaining.
