While reading Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks by Morton E Tavel, MD. I was interested to see how it was going to be written as a self-help book. This is a book about your health and debunks some of the myths that many accept as the truth and really have no science to back it up. This book gives you that science and helps you to see the fact from the fiction in an easy to read format. There are also tricks on how you can lead a healthier life.
I am not big on books where people, especially doctors, write in a way that they think I am stupid or that I am so confused of the high fa-looting words they used I would be turned off. When medical terms were used they were explained in layman words. Well this is not one of those books. It was written in a way that made you feel like you were informed as well as having a friend do the informing. The topics varied and yet were ones people all over were interested in. Things from chocolate to gluten to wine and so much more. The topics were varied and still linked together. It was written in a way that you could jump in topic to topic or read it front to back. I did both. It was informative and very flowing in the reading. When it came to the controversial subjects such as vaccines I was unable to disagree with him since he gave proof to his reasoning.
It was full of science information with his thoughts such on pg.13 “Although the authors did not mention....” with the reason,in this case weight loss, did not happen. This let me see that he was passing on more information as a friend might or someone who cares a about your health.
There was footnotes through out that linked you to the back to see added information to do further research or to find out what something meant. Each chapter was a topic so when you see there are 62 chapters, don't get discouraged. Most are short but still very informative chapters as well as some that are longer. Each chapter was broke down into sections: Tips, Myths, and Tricks. This made it easy to follow along or jump around if you wanted to. When there were comments about different medications Dr. Tavel was quick to add the side effects so that the information was readily seen. He gives his thoughts on the drugs with candor and easy speech of a normal person. He even goes on to give one notable result of a side effect on pg. 18. of a death the medication caused. He used humor at times but not in a way that made you think he was trying to hard to be normal. The studies used were not just from the US but from all over the world.
It was both user friendly in the e-book form as well as helpful. I liked how the author kept the words simple Dr. Tavel did not use bigger word where a short one will do. (George Orwell)
The couple of grammatical errors that I saw were not worth mentioning specifically. On the whole it was not enough to drop the rating for me. I really liked this book. 4 out of 4 stars for me. I have already been telling my friends about it. It would be a great book for those looking for more information on the truth behind some of the myths of health and food. It would also be good for anyone that likes to learn as they read.
Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks helped me understand things I need to change in my lifestyle and eating habits. The book let me know that some of my favorite foods aren't as bad as I had thought, and that other foods are worse than I knew. Things like brown rice instead of being healthy is really very toxic with the arsenic. This is only a hint of the information that is in this book.
