Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Matthew Tysz's "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" is a thrilling fantasy book that immerses readers in a multiverse brimming with magic, science, mystery, and history. The novel showcases a vast array of characters, but it centres mostly around Galen, - an individual from the Prince's Islands embarking on his journey towards the land named Voulhire, - introducing new horizons for him to explore. Throughout this exciting narrative, tension mounts as secrets are unveiled and mysteries revealed captivating audiences till its very end.
With bright eyes and a determined spirit, Galen aspires to succeed in life. His goal is to meet his great-uncle and learn the blacksmith's craft. In Voulhire, we encounter Lord Eldus - a benevolent ruler working towards uncovering the enigma surrounding the infamous mage Meldorath. Throughout this gripping tale of epic fantasy filled with mystery, action-packed sequences, and personal growth, several other characters are introduced with their own plans entwined with motivations. The first book in this series appropriately titled "The New Beginning" sets the tone for forthcoming books and impressively displays the author's exceptional talent in world-building. It serves as a strong base from which future stories can follow suit.
In my opinion, I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. What struck me the most about it was how well the author built their world. The country of Voulhire is incredibly detailed and thought-out. Everything from its political structure, to its rich history and intricate ties with the magical world (Caromentis), are meticulously developed throughout the novel. A great deal of effort went into crafting such an engrossing story.
I enjoyed how the book began with a focus on the main character's perspective. However, as numerous other characters entered the story, I found myself captivated by trying to determine who was truly at centre stage. However, in attempting to juggle too many point-of-views of different characters simultaneously, it felt like the author had overreached their capabilities and became overly ambitious for my taste. The series has an overwhelming introduction that can confuse readers about the true plot of the book. While it may initially seem disjointed, delving into the mysteries behind its worlds and characters will grip your curiosity and drive you to discover where the narrative is headed.
This novel is expertly edited, and I did not find any errors. I would recommend this novel for fans of science fiction and fantasy genres who enjoy a complex read with intricate connections between story elements. However, it ought to be noted that due to instances of profanity usage, this book may not be suitable for children.
