Summary

The story revolves around two adults in their twenties. Haatim a Theology graduate and Abigail a hunter for the mysterious council, who protect our world from the paranormal forces hiding in plain sight. Haatim is suffering from a personal loss and has lost his faith. He leaves his family home and returns to America to deal with his personal grief. Abigail is dealing with a loss of her own and is hell bent on undoing a terrible sacrifice. When their paths collide and become one neither expects what destiny has in store for these two young adults. Their fate awaits them at Raven’s Peak.

Writing Style

The style of writing in this novel captivates the reader from the beginning. The language the author uses is absorbing and extremely visual. The opening few pages were quite gruesome and I was not sure what I was getting into. After I got over the shock of the prologue, I found myself captivated by the story and was highly impressed by the intelligence behind the words on the pages.

Characters

I found the characters amazing. From the time we first meet Haatim you fall instantly in love with him. He’s lost in an ocean of sorrow and is just trying to function and get his life back on track. Enter Abigail an attractive young woman with a dark, haunting past. A strong female character who kicks ass. As they grow together, the reader can’t help but really care about them and root for their success.

Plot

The plot of this novel is not what I expected when I first began reading. The development of the story was fast paced, interesting with a couple of A-HA moments thrown in for good measure. Some dark comedy is included to give the story various layers. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this novel as much as I did, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Conclusion

I rate this book 3 out of 4. I found the visual descriptions a bit difficult to handle at times, therefore I wouldn’t recommend this to the faint hearted or weak stomached. I would have also enjoyed a little more time spent on the supernatural aspect as at times it seemed a bit rushed. I would recommend this to fans of the TV series ‘Supernatural’ as it rings of familiarity at some points. Also if you were a fan of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ I would advise you get yourself a copy as soon as you can.
