Review of Lethal Injection
Lethal Injection is a highly engrossing science fiction novel by Karin Lovold. Set in the 1980s, the book follows Ian as he embarks on a seemingly impossible quest to save the world from a secret conspiracy.
Ian is just a brilliant chemistry professor at Harvard University. His life takes a turn when his grandfather, Ernest, passes away. He leaves his cushy job and joins Renewal Inc.'s The Circle as the lead chemist in his grandfather's stead. However, everything is not as simple as it seems. The members of The Circle have been tirelessly promoting the use of memroth as an alternative source of energy. The higher-ups also aim to use the precious gem to rid the world of people whom they deem to be undesirable. Unbeknownst to almost everyone, memroth is mined by the prisoners of Reathran, a secret penal colony on the far side of the moon. Certain selected death row prisoners are administered lethal injections and covertly sent to the moon to perform slave labor till the end of their time. Ernest had tasked Ian to join The Circle and put an end to all the evil.
How will Ian fulfill his grandfather's last will? Who will be his ally? Will he be able to stop the evil doings of the Circle and save the world?
Lethal Injection is a masterfully written book. It had my attention till the very end. Lovold gives a scientific explanation to everything. She gives us details about the various chemicals and the complicated procedures required to survive on the moon. All this makes it easy to visualize the story. To be honest, Lethal Injection reminds me of Isaac Asimov's science fiction stories. It is that brilliant.
Karin Lovold creates a relatable cast of characters. In the beginning, Ian appears to be a lonely scientist committed to his work. By the end, he evolves into an empathetic man who values his relationships. I loved his bond with Malaki. Everyone should have a friend like Malaki. He is always there for Ian, even risking his own life at times. His best characteristic is that he thinks on his feet and does everything to keep his plan in motion. Nikolina is another great character. It was intriguing to know the thought process of a death row prisoner stuck on the moon. I liked her growing camaraderie with Ian. Jack is a true friend. Leah is a strong character as well. Charles Price is a run-of-the-mill antagonist. The character that surprised me the most is Benjamin. I was truly flabbergasted by him.
Overall, Karin Lovold's Lethal Injection is a wonderful read. I did not find anything to dislike in this engaging novel. Hence, I happily rate Lethal Injection 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this book to fans of all science fiction novels.
