Review of Stevie Tenderheart Books A Second Kiss Goodnight (A Bedtime Story)
This book has a lot of entertainment and valuable information packed into it. It inspires kids to use their imaginations while telling a tale of love and caring. Young children will enjoy the icky factor of animal spit, cobwebs in the nose, and smelly skunks. Older children will experience the joy of sharing some of their favorite things with their neighborhood friends.
As mentioned in other Stevie Tenderheart books, Stevie loves his bed. However, he does not like going to bed while the sun is shining. In this book, Stevie devises a plan to help him fall asleep quickly and dream the marvelous dreams that his imagination conjures up. He enlists the help of all the animals and creatures in his neighborhood. Stevie needs every animal and creature to come to his bed and kiss him twice so that he can fall asleep quickly. All the animals and creatures are happy to oblige.
Many different animals and creatures visit Stevie’s bed to bestow their kisses on him. Each visitor has some characteristics unique to that species, some pleasant and some not so much. Stevie takes some precautions and plans corrective actions for the next day to ensure that his visitors do not disrupt his room or person too much. Children can learn about all these species while enjoying humorous descriptions of Stevie's encounters.
The part of the book I enjoyed the most was when the other kids living in the neighborhood became aware of Stevie’s visitors and wanted to share in the joy. The reaction of the animals and creatures was very precious. I also loved the part about parents kissing their kids goodnight twice and Stevie’s view of why this happens.
The quotes included in the book are fascinating to read. Some are well-known, while others do not appear that often. A friend of mine recently mentioned that, for her, a good quote is like the salt added to enhance the taste of a dish. I relate to that sentiment.
Small children may not be able to absorb everything that the book has to offer in one sitting. Readers can easily divide the content into a few bedtime stories. The book contains no pictures or illustrations, and the author planned it this way to stimulate the imagination. I am sure children will enjoy creating their own drawings of Stevie’s visitors.
My only criticism against this book is that the theme is suitable for young children, probably about three to six years old, while the lack of pictures and the volume of information are better suited to older kids. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, there are workarounds. It depends on how parents approach bedtime stories and the criteria set for the books they want to read with their children. I would see it as an opportunity to stimulate creativity and expand knowledge.
The editor conducted a professional review, and I discovered only two minor errors.
Despite the criticism mentioned, I did not dislike anything about the book. It is well-written, funny, and informative. I therefore rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
