Review of Sent to Watch
David J. Lebenstein's captivating science fiction book Sent to Watch transports readers to a multitude of alien worlds. This story follows Interplanetary Intelligence Service operatives as they secretly monitor other worlds, including Earth, under strict directives not to impede their natural evolution.
These agents take on the personas of locals and blend in with many societies and eras around the universe. The text under consideration transports us to early 19th-century England during the height of the Napoleonic era, under the disguise of the seemingly normal couple Robert and Jenny Weatherby. Our main characters, Agents Ori and Unni, are charged with gathering crucial intelligence, but as the act goes on, real emotions develop between them, complicating their objective even further. Sent to Watch's cosmos is evidence of the author's extraordinary creativity. A group of highly developed cultures called the Confederation of Civilized Planets is united by the goal of observing Earth's evolution and refraining from interfering with it. The invasion of a malevolent empire complicates this non-interference policy even more and presents ethical challenges for the agents. The tale deftly examines issues of love and duty and the morality of interfering with extraterrestrial cultures.
David J. Lebenstein demonstrates an amazing dedication to historical authenticity and in-depth investigation, which is especially noticeable in the meticulous depiction of England in the 19th century. The speech and habits of the people are precisely aligned with the period, giving the scene an authentic feel. The technological aspects of spacecraft and medical breakthroughs, for example, are very creative and believable.
To sum up, "Sent to Watch" is a compelling fusion of science fiction and alternate history that transports readers to a highly detailed extraterrestrial setting while deftly incorporating real-life historical characters like Wellington and Napoleon into the story.
Everything about this book was fantastic, including the detailed world-building, the innovative use of technology, and the accurate historical portrayals of 19th-century England. I loved that it's fast-paced. There isn't anything negative about this book or anything I would like to change about it. I think this book is professionally edited, as I couldn't find a single flaw in it. I would rate it five out of five stars.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical and science fiction. They will enjoy it a lot.
