Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is the story of an alien law enforcement agent named Rynah. Betrayed by the one person closest to her, she is forced to escape the destruction of her home planet. With limited time and choices Rynah takes the only ship available to her, a sentient ship called Solaris.

Soon Rynah finds herself facing the truth of her people. What were once believed to be stories and legends are hints to the salvation of her home. To succeed on her mission, Rynah must place her trust in a talkative ship and four unlikely heroes from earth. Together they must fight to defeat the one who would destroy them and save the universe.

The premise of this book was rather interesting but I have to say that the delivery was sub-par. Fraught with run on sentences and overdone descriptions, I had a hard time finding anything to truly enjoy about this novel. It reads almost as if it is the first draft, rather than the finished product. The author favors the use of parentheticals to the extreme. Half the time I was almost out of breath just reading the long-winded descriptions of superficial things. It was tedious and at times, boring.

The character choices were a bit cliched and read like out of character fan-fiction of a space novel. The voice of certain characters was at times indistinguishable from each other. Most of the characters were flat and uninteresting. The characters that had potential to be interesting were outrageously written. Others were completely forgettable.

The main issue that I had with this novel was the blatant use of other people’s ideas. For example: almost an exact copy of an iconic scene from a well-known space opera is used in this novel. If you are going to take something so iconic to use in your novel you should at least re-write it to make it your own. I am not saying that the idea is completely original, as I have read it in many books and seen it in many films. The difference is that the person who wrote it put a unique twist on it to make it their own.

I wish I could say that I was able to lose myself in the story, despite the flaws that I found with it. The truth is that this novel could use quite a bit of workshopping and the touch of a professional editor. The story idea is quite interesting, and there were some great scene ideas that had a lot of potential. I wish I could have enjoyed them more. I have to give this novel a rating of Two out of Four Stars.
