From Drift to Shift – how change can bring true meaning and happiness to your work and life. Jody B Millar
Millar sets out to show the reader her roadmap for happiness, helping the reader identify the shift needed to get a life you love. Through a book filled with inspiring stories of people who have met a challenge, moved away from a life of drifting, and found the shift to propel them towards a greater goal, Millar inspires and encourages the reader to strive for more.
Starting with smashing plates, she encourages us to discard expectations that hold us back from living life as our truest selves. Writing with compassion and hope she wants to help others find themselves using this road map too. She uses a lot of positive ideas and thoughts on one page, which at times can be a little confusing to read as the thoughts jump around a little too fast for a reader.
The first chapter starts by exploring our habits, and how people just don’t like to change. Challenging the reader to move away from a life that is just fine. Through the compelling story of the co-founders of iFoster, a major non-profit organization, Millar teaches of others who found their shift despite adversity and that even the darkest story can change for the better. A thought-provoking story with a good ending.
The next two chapter dives further into the concept of finding your ‘shift’ despite the barriers. She describes shift as a process that can take time, but you must follow your heart.
Part two of the book moves towards knowing when to shift. A shift can be due to a survival instinct, suffering can lead to a shift. Usually there is an incident that propels the shift. She encourages the reader to have a purpose in life and that despite roadblocks the goal is to find your normal and be happy there. Through the story of a burnt out CEO turned life coach she teachers the reader to take the time to unplug, and find your direction. Be conscious about healing and shifting.
Part three moves into how to shift. How to take concrete steps towards a change. Shift can be a gradual process for some, or a quick and dramatic change for others. Regardless, the point is to keep going. Commitment and focus are key for anyone wanting to make a real shift. Be open to the possibilities that appear in life. When a door closes another may not open, but a window might. Move forward without regret. One chapter focuses on the power of synchronicity and how to be the hero in our own lives.
Part Four talks more about what happens after the shift. When you feel good, more good comes your way. This according to the author, is the natural flow of the universe. She tells the reader to not block the flow. Stay curious, go after what interests you. Throughout this book Millar offers practical advice such as keep a notebook, be an encourager, surround yourself with positive people and listen, learn repeat. A good short read that will boost your positivity and get you thinking about making that shift in your life. I rate this book a 3 out of 4. It is light and easy to read.
