Who Told You That You Were Naked? is a Christian, non-fiction book written by William Combs, a retired Presbyterian minister. This book reexamines the events that happened in the Garden of Eden particularly those which led to sin. He started off the first chapter by dramatizing the story of Adam, Eve and the serpent who tricked them into eating the forbidden fruit. Combs retold their story by writing it in a way that readers would feel like reading a fiction book rather than reading a familiar biblical story.
The dramatization and use of picture words would make the readers more understanding about the point of view of the characters of the Bible and its authors. For example, what we generally know is that Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil – an act of disobedience- because they wanted to be like God. In Combs’ book, he explained thoroughly how their act can be compared to how a son would wanted to be like his father. The author explains by backing it up with the scriptures from the Bible.
From the definition of sin and its redemption through Jesus Christ, Combs discussed them together with the different versions or interpretations from the original language the Bible was written. This helps in dissecting what the authors really wanted to convey. There are also personal testimonies that can be found in this book as well as questions for discussions after every chapter.
What I like about reading this book is that it was like listening to the sermon in a whole new level -thanks to the dramatizations written. Despite of this, I don’t think that non- Christians would want to read this book from beginning to end especially if they’re not really familiar with some of the scriptures of the bible. As for the writings in the book, I find it a little confusing when the font changed several times. There are also times that I had no idea if I was already reading the actual passage from the bible, the discussion of the author, or just the dramatization.
Overall, this book is very informative and as the subtitle claimed, it was indeed “refreshing”. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The reason I cannot give it a perfect score because some of the writings can be a little confusing. Generally, I highly recommend this book especially to those Christian believers who would want to study the Book of Genesis in depth.
