The Ravens Peak, by Lincoln Cole, is a fictional book based on mysticism, murder mystery and action. The book relies heavily on various religious and cult beliefs, black magic and various manifestations of those. The novel starts with one of the main characters engaging in what he is famous for. The story then meanders to various sub plots and tries to merge them at various points in the story.

The book represents a fresh approach to the way cults are handled across the world. But the author fails to exploit the mysteries and cult practices in various other religions. Christianity alone doesn’t have many interesting practices. In fact, the plot should have dealt with some other religions even in this instalment of the books. The lead character is also shown to be very sketchy and his introduction is also quite abrupt. The writer fails to get the reader connect to the protagonists. The transformations in their stories also fails to make an impact. The story ends leaving the user wanting more, and leaves enough scope for a second part and maybe more. Considering this is the first part, it seems apt.

The story has a lot of similarities with the Harry Potter series, with telekinetic, dark lords, and magic liquids. Also considering the fact about the reluctant and ignorant but, nick-of-the-time-lucky-hero, reminds the reader of Potter at all possible stages. The end resembles a Hollywood potboiler. The last-minute bravado, leaves some logical gaps that need to be filled. This converted into a movie would make for a good horror / thriller genre movie.

The book would be a good read for people who are fans of Dan Brown and the likes. This one also sets to explore the realms of angels and Demons. It’s a decent read. It’s interesting in parts as well. The language is fluid and apt and error free. The action sequences deliver the punch even when you read them. The author has a vast topic in hand and can do wonders with it. A multi-pronged approach other than only Christianity can be considered, giving it a much-needed diversification.

I give a star rating of 3 out of 4. I don’t want to give it a 2, because it is better than an average book, however since the book, leaves so much to be desired for by the reader. I would ideally rate it at 2.5 stars out of 4.
