This book, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe, is a heartwarming children's book that teaches valuable lessons about friendship, empathy, and tolerance. The main protagonists in the book were Donny and Mary Grace. The two siblings were sent on a vacation to live with their grandparents in California while their parents went on a mission in Kenya.

While Donny seemed excited about the news, how would Mary Grace feel about it? Will she find it easy to leave her friends while trying to adjust to her new environment? Read this book to learn more. This book talks about important social issues faced by children in our world today, such as bullying and understanding disabilities. Through Mary Grace's encounter with her classmates and her relationship with Penelope Li, I believe readers of this book will learn about the significance of empathy, tolerance, and standing up against bullies, thereby inculcating great values in our children.

I loved the way the author handled the major themes of this book with sensitivity and creativity. The book's plot is fast-paced. The issues that occurred at the County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas, are enough to keep every reader well engaged with the book. I personally loved Mary's personality in this book. The way she displayed sacrificial love for her brother and how she learned to empathize with those who mistreated her is a virtue that has to be emulated.

The characters in this book were well developed, and the storyline was superb. Free of errors, this book was impeccably edited. There was absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for its captivating storyline, well-developed characters, and moral lessons. I recommend this book to children, elementary school teachers, and parents. It teaches us important life lessons in a relatable and easily comprehensible way, making it a valuable addition to any child's bookshelf.
