Escape by Belle Ami is a romantic fiction. It is one of those novels that leave you wanting for more.
The main theme in the book is love. I say main theme and not just theme because the novel addresses other minor topics such as international relations especially in the Middle East. However, after reading the book, the lasting theme in the minds of readers is the love between the two main characters.
Escape is a story of two separate fates which come to be intertwined. At the beginning of the book, we the readers are introduced to Cyrus Hassani, the male protagonist and we immediately realize that we are in for a story with a hot alpha male. Along the line, we meet Layla Wallace and she is a redheaded beauty and definitely no pushover. Layla at first is rescued by Cyrus from an unfortunate situation. As the story progresses, they are on the run from a powerful man in Iran, an equally powerful Islamic state, and at the same time fighting the attraction that they feel for each other. Cyrus and Layla strive to make it out of Iran unharmed. Severally they find themselves in difficult life threatening situations. The novel is set across three countries, the United States, Iran and Israel.
The novel is undeniably interesting as well as entertaining. One major interesting aspect of the novel is its descriptive nature. Belle Ami describes every aspect of the story and therefore leaves no room for stray imaginations. She aptly describes every room and region she introduces to the readers, as well as everyone that enters the storyline. Also, the author takes her readers from one region to another without disrupting the flow of the story. And in my mind’s eye, I got to see parts of Iran, Israel, and the United States without leaving the comfort of my couch.
Furthermore, the endless banter between Cyrus and Layla is one of the entertaining aspects of the novel, the ease with which they speak to each other is quite refreshing. Also, that as a reader, I could see into the minds of the characters and read their thoughts, which fellow characters could not hear was extremely entertaining.
What I liked most about Escape was that while being entertained, I was also being educated. Anyone reading this novel would immediately know that the author had done some research on relations in the middle east, as well as the Arabic language. Although I quite enjoyed the book, I did not quite like the absence of a footnote to define a few of the terms and expressions written in Arabic which as a reader I could not understand.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, this is because it is a wonderful book and though not mind blowing, it is a book good enough and I am glad that I read it. It is not one to be easily forgotten. I think this novel would appeal mostly to young adults who are at that stage in life where they are searching for love. I feel the notion of love is one that they would enjoy.
