Book review: heaven and earth by Arturo Riojas
Heaven and Earth is a science fiction novel written by Arturo Riojas. The story involves secrets held by the NASA, the Airforce, CDC,DHSand the FDA that they can't disclose, their excuse being that they are 'protecting' the people. It shows the misinformation and ignorance that is the nation and the pain and suffering it inflicts on the people. The tale involves different kinds of races. For the space travelers, the Treretumians, itis a race against the Muimdac. For the Humans,it is a race to reverse the environmental poisoning that is evident.
Olga, Gavilan, Billy,Sam and Nivla team up to investigate on how to solve the problems that both races face.Olga being the 'cause and effect' kind of person. She is a brilliant young woman working as a principal researcher at the NASA's jet propulsion lab in Pasadena, California. She discovers events detected in Sirius a neighboring star which sparks her curiosity. Gavilan who is Olga's friend has had stories of 'the Teachers' who showed humans how to develop. Billy and Sam on the other hand work at the CDC and they have discovered about the Cadmium poisoning issue which has been kept under wraps by powerful people in the government.
The Treretumians have come to earth to examine the fruits of the seeds they had planted, and to check the progress of the earth. Nivla seeks the help of Olga and the others to retrieve the remains of his brother and other Treretumians which were left on earth.
I liked Gavilan an the way he is so supportive to Olga through everything. His sense of humor and how he tries to cheer Olga up whenever she is down. Arturo's explanation in the story are excellent and accurate which made me wonder if the cadmium poisoning issue is true.
The cadmium poisoning facts at the end of each chapter weren't that exciting to read, because it was like a summary of what was already mentioned in the chapter. The story wasn't all that adventurous. I ended up skimming over all those facts and some parts of the book. The facts part reminded me of reading school notes which i wasn't a fan of.
I rate Heaven and Earth 2 out of 4 stars. The story wasn't that interesting . I would however recommend this book to the science fiction lovers.
