The prologue of Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga book 1) gives us a hint that this will not be the usual science fiction thriller. And the first chapter leads us to believe this will be a nice love story with a happy ending. However, as the reader will find, the love story is not what one would expect but rather a story of betrayal.

The story is set sometime in the future, but we are not given an actual date. Some
of the events we explore were actually begun 50 years or more before and in a galaxy rather distant from Earth. In this story the reader finds alien life forms from various planets working together in order to prevent the antagonist (Klanor) from collecting a certain number of crystals and thereby enabling him to wield supreme power. The main protagonist is actually a young woman (Rynah) who inherits a rather unusual spaceship (Solaris) from her grandfather, a man that planned for her welfare many years before his death. Solaris has an artificial intelligence that Rynah’s grandfather programmed to protect her. Solaris also is a wealth of knowledge for Rynah about legends and is Rynah’s friend. Solaris works hard to fulfill her mission to protect Rynah using her many unusual powers, such as being able to transport people from various time periods via a worm hole, flying herself and using this advantage in unexpected ways.

I very much enjoyed reading Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga book 1) by Janet McNulty. I plan to read more in the series. The writing is coherent, thoughtful, detailed, and entertaining. The main character is a very likable young woman, and I found myself wanting her to succeed. The other characters in the book are not as well established by the author but are explored well enough that the reader finds them likable and interesting.

By bringing in characters from different time periods and backgrounds, the interactions between them are interesting and show how the characters form bonds over time and thru struggles. Each character’s strengths are shown early on so that the reader may engage. I found myself anxious for each person to succeed when defeat seemed eminent.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4. The editing appears professional with very few errors. The plot is well thought out and established. The writing is enjoyable and pleasant with plenty of details. Ms. McNulty tells the story in a logical and timely way. Any jumps of the story to a previous time are explained and are useful to the situation the characters are currently experiencing. I enjoyed the descriptions of each setting as the story unfolds and came to really care what happened to the characters. The idea of visiting many planets with all sorts of different plants, animals, and atmospheres peaks my interest. I look forward to reading further works by this author.

This is the first review I've read of this book & I rather like it; it reminds me of the movie Max Steel.
