Imagine waking up one day and having to leave the life you’re already used to, leaving friends, beautiful memories, and most importantly, family. Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is an adventure and mystery novel that digs into the lives of two children, Donny and Mary Grace, after their parents were sent on a missionary journey to a faraway town in Africa.

Donny, a child living with Down syndrome, and Mary Grace, whose happiness was largely determined by that of her brother, had to relocate to California to stay with their grandparents after their parents had to travel in an emergency. In California, they met the Grandma Gang, a group of old women who take delight in solving mysteries and unraveling puzzles, which aligns with Mary Grace’s interests. Mary Grace, with the help of the Grandma Gang, solved a personal mystery, this time involving Mary Grace and her dear brother living with Down syndrome.

The book by Catherine A. Pepe is a very interesting piece that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. I enjoyed the suspense while trying to unravel the mystery alongside Mary Grace and the gang. I also enjoyed the fact that the book enlightens the readers about children living with Down syndrome and their special needs.

I absolutely enjoyed this book, as it was well edited and void of grammatical errors. I also loved the fact that it illustrates the beautiful bond that families share as well as the hospitality towards humans, and more specifically, children with special needs. I did not dislike anything about the book as it has a very satisfactory ending and is filled with lots of life lessons, such as peaceful coexistence and tolerance, which are portrayed by the grandparents and the grandma gang.

I give this book a rating of five out of five stars because of its captivating, alluring, and engaging storyline. As indicated earlier, this book has no noticeable errors or flaws, allowing readers to easily grasp its contents and flow smoothly through the pages. If you enjoy adventures, solving puzzles, and unraveling mysteries, this book is a good read, and I highly recommend it.
