The novel, Raven’s Peak, by Lincoln Cole, focuses on the journey of Haatim and Abigail as they try to protect themselves and others from supernatural, demonic, forces. To Abigail, this is a normal part of her world; she has devoted her life to hunting demons. Haatim, on the other hand, did not even believe in supernatural existence prior to their meeting. Haatim is first approached by a stranger who is in need of a private investigator. Looking for a great blog story, Haatim agrees to the gig. Although this random approach seemed innocent enough, Haatim was targeted specifically and has connections to the supernatural he could never imagine.

The first few pages of this book drew me in because of how creepy, yet dreamlike, it seemed. It opens with Arthur, a Reverend, locked away and Frieda, with an unknown connection to Arthur, begging for his help. While they discuss the past, I couldn’t help but keep reading to discover just what happened and gain some clarity. Over the course of the novel, all of the questions get answered.

Cole is genius in his way of answering the many questions this book provokes. Much of the beginning focuses on Haatim, who is just as in the dark and confused about this supernatural world as the reader. Most of the answers are learned when Haatim asks Abigail questions. Cole uses Haatim as a vessel for the reader to learn more about the world and get their burning questions answered, keeping the reader and Haatim at the same pace. However, when a piece of information is necessary for the plot to continue moving forward, the focus temporarily shifts to Abigail to fill in the blanks while conversing with someone more knowledgeable. This keep the story flowing smoothly without being overwhelming or confusing for the reader. However, when action scenes arise, there is a split between the two. The focus alternates between the two characters, allowing the reader to see everything that is happening during the scene. This allows the plot to stay engaging and fast paced because the reader gets to see all angles.

This novel is filled with nonstop action, as one can imagine a life of demon hunting would have. Although, there is a deeper side. Haatim has studied theology and his father is a spiritual leader, making religion a large part of his life. However, grappling with the loss of his younger sister to cancer has left him questioning everything he knows about religion and faith. Ultimately losing his faith, his journey with the demons forces him to look at it through a new lense and reevaluate what he has been taught. This powerful theme artfully plays out throughout the novel, creating a deeper and more thought provoking story than I would have imagined from a supernatural book.

Overall, I would give this a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I am typically not a fan of this genre, but between the non stop action and captivating religion undertones, I was hooked. This book would be a great read for anyone who enjoys a fast pace, especially those preferring supernatural settings.
