I’m one of those readers that judge a book by the blurb (and most of the time, the cover). When I first read about Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole it instantaneously jumped into my “To Read” list. The story first introduced me to Arthur Vangeest also known as The Reverend. The scenes involving Arthur in his cell reminded me of the albino Silas in The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. I have to admit that it almost threw me off, but I am glad I decided to continue reading. I didn’t expect that the story will grasp me in this early part of the book. Arthur being a well-known hunter met with Frieda, a member of The Council who requires his assistance, only to find out that Abigail, a girl he save and treated as daughter, is missing. Arthur without delay went to the site hoping to save Abigail. In order to save her though Arthur decided to make a deal with the demon that is corrupting his daughter, killing him but saving Abigail in the process.

Past forward five months later, we are introduced to another character named Haatim Arison, a rebellious rich kid who, after the death of his sister, loses his trust in his own family and his faith in God. A series of misjudged events intertwined him to Abigail who, after the event with Arthur, tarnished her reputation to The Council. And in order to redeem herself, she decided to do diminutive missions for The Council.

After dealing with the demon who almost took Haatim, Abigail then decided to bring him along as she embarks on a mission to Raven’s Peak not knowing that the events from five months ago will come back to haunt her. She then meets a demon called Bephelgor to whom she found out about what had happened to Arthur. Abigail then decides to do everything she can to save Arthur. Meanwhile, Haatim is trying his best to deal with the fact that demons, hunters and The Council exist. Together they are thrown into a chaos that will test their faith to themselves and to the things that they believe in. But will they be strong enough to do so?

I find myself rooting for Abigail throughout the story. It almost feels like you are literally experiencing every single event with Abigail and Haatim, and you just can’t put it down hoping to find out what will happen next. I also like the contrast between Abigail and Haatim’s personalities. Abi being the determined hunter that she is and Haatim being that annoying wimp, making me hope that Abi will just leave him instead.

Raven’s Peak is the first book in the World of Fire series by Lincoln Cole. The end of the book is a cliff-hanger making you immediately seek and read the second book. I give it 4 out of 4 stars. Although I enjoyed reading the story, I have to admit the “good versus evil” theme is already a cliché for me though of course, Cole put his own personal touch in the story. I am hoping that the second book will dive deeper into the story.

Overall, I can say that I will recommend this book if you enjoy thriller, mystery and the supernatural. Also if you enjoy Stephen King or Dan Brown books this might be right at your alley.
