"Behavior Beyond Analysis" by Richard Van Doren is an engaging thriller exploring the depths of criminal profiling and ritualistic crimes. Abel Haskins, an ex-cop and former parish minister, now works as an FBI behavioral analyst, making him a relatable and compelling character. His background in law enforcement sharpens his sense of justice, while his pastoral experience brings a unique empathy to his role, setting him apart in the realm of crime thrillers.
The story hooks the reader right from the start and maintains the intrigue to the very end. Haskins, along with his FBI team, chases a serial killer who uses pentagrams in his crimes, adding a chilling layer of mystery to the plot. The narrative skillfully integrates elements of ritual murder and Jewish mysticism, weaving a complex web of suspense.
The novel stands out for its references to real criminal cases like the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the Jonestown massacre, adding a layer of realism. Van Doren's careful integration of these historical crimes enriches the story’s authenticity and depth.
The book is well-paced and characterized by clear, precise writing. The dialogue is sharp, reflecting each character’s distinct voice and enhancing the realism of their interactions. What truly sets this book apart is the deep psychological insight it offers into its characters, especially Haskins, who grapples with his past and the moral ambiguities of his work.
The supporting cast adds richness to the narrative, with dynamics within the FBI team that are both genuine and complex. The portrayal of the Behavioral Unit is detailed and engaging, providing a glimpse into the world of criminal profiling.
The novel also thoughtfully explores themes of belief and the nature of evil, posing challenging questions about the impact of belief systems on human behavior.
In sum, "Behavior Beyond Analysis" is a meticulously crafted thriller, marked by its thoughtful character exploration and rich thematic depth. I recommend this book to anyone interested in crime fiction and psychological thrillers for a truly captivating reading experience. I rate this book five out of five stars for exceptional editing and nothing to dislike.
