Review of Blanket Immunity
[Following is a volunteer review of "Blanket Immunity" by Adam Van Susteren.]
The plot centers on Jo Channing, a successful prosecutor who quits her employment to start a criminal defense firm after losing a court election. Her new job path is full of moral and financial pitfalls, which forces her to take on controversial customers like a drug dealer, a murderer, and an accused rapist. Jo is pushed to her absolute limit in these cases—both personally and professionally—as she negotiates the perilous legal system. The book dives into Jo's personal issues, such as her financial difficulties and the moral conundrums she encounters, in addition to examining her professional life. The story shifts, raising concerns about the nature of true justice.
The first book in the Jo Channing series, "Blanket Immunity" by Adam Van Susteren, offers a novel viewpoint on the legal thriller genre. Using his wealth of legal knowledge, Van Susteren, a seasoned civil litigation lawyer who has been in San Diego since 2004, creates a story that is both authentic and intricate. Beyond simply being a thrilling read, this book delves deeply into the moral and ethical quandaries that confront attorneys, examining the murky corners of justice as seen through Jo Channing, the main character.
Jo Channing is portrayed as a multifaceted, nuanced character who struggles to uphold her ethics while facing her own issues. The supporting cast, which includes a cunning street criminal named Omar and a cunning "victim," gives the narrative more depth and complexity. The book offers an insider's view of the court's operations, exposing the number of cases that are resolved outside of court. The book benefited from extensive, expert editing to fix grammatical problems. It makes reading more enjoyable overall and keeps me interested throughout the whole story, which indicates I don't have any dislikes for the book.

The effective characters, authentic legal setting, and moral depth set it apart in the legal thriller genre.
