Review of Mysteries Of the First Instant
[Following is a volunteer review of "Mysteries Of the First Instant" by Daniel Friedmann.]
Mysteries of the First Instant by Daniel Friedmann with Dania Sheldon is a non-fiction book. Daniel Friedmann, a retired CEO and professional engineer with a master’s in engineering physics, has over 35 years in the space industry. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers and three books on science and religion, with his work featured in various media. Dania Sheldon is a professional writer, editor, and researcher who holds a doctorate in English from the University of Oxford and received the 2017 Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence. The combined experience led to this great book.
The book is a result of the authors’ desire to reconcile the Biblical Genesis account of the universe's origins with scientific explanations. The author tries to answer questions left unanswered by Biblical Genesis and the scientific Big Bang theory. The book notes that there are critical details the two theories do not address, such as the origins of time, space, elementary particles, or the forces of nature. Further, the Biblical approach and the scientific approach fail to shed light on what existed before the initial creation. The author asks questions such as: What did God create heaven and earth from? What existed before that? Although the biblical and scientific approaches differ, according to the authors, there are some similarities in the natural chain of events governed by the laws of nature. The book expounds on these mysteries.
The authors’ contrast the scientific timeline of the universe's 13.8 billion-year history with the six-day creation account in Genesis and their potential connections. They go deeper to investigate the nature of space and time, the behavior of particles on a quantum level, dark matter, forces of nature, and the fine-tuning of the universe for life.
What I liked about the book is its use of easy-to-understand language that simplifies complex topics like the origin of the universe, making the nature of reality understandable to all readers. The authors have avoided using technical terms but instead used easy-to-understand everyday language to explain scientific theories. The authors have also supported their ideas with relevant scriptures from the Bible and simplified scientific theories like black holes and the Big Bang theory, which makes the book interesting to read. The book is enjoyable for all readers and provides deep insights into the universe's origins without requiring any knowledge of science or the Bible. I didn’t find anything dislikable in the book.
I commend the editor too, because the book is exceptionally edited.
In my opinion, this book deserves 5 stars out of 5. I recommended it to anyone seeking an entertaining read on the universe’s beginning and its well-kept mysteries.
