I really enjoy Chinese literature and historical fiction. In a Chinese novel, every character is developed like a main character, and the reader is given an experience of the culture through the hearts and minds of Han personage.

Some of my favorites include:

Red Poppies by Alai

Sing-Song Girls of Shanghai by Han Bangqing

As far as historical fiction goes, I really enjoy the novels of James Clavell. He wrote what is known as the Asian Saga, and the most famous of the series is entitled Shogun. It is a very entertaining and educational read.

I further recommend the following classics for ALL readers:

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

and

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.

If you are more interested in a simple read, then I think you should check out A Series of Unfortunate Events. While it is intended for a young audience, it is chalked full of dry humor and witticisms that can be appreciated by adults as well. Please do not allow the film starring Jim Carrey to influence your opinion of these wonderful books.
