Review:

Are you feeling in the mood for a monstrously good mystery? Look no further than Sheila English's "The Deadly Pieces". This supernatural thriller reimagines Frankenstein's monster as Adam, a U.S. Marshal with secrets to hide. As this Adam struggles to find out who he is while working for the League of Supernatural Hunters. Hold on to your hats for an across-genre adventure that seamlessly marries classic horror with detective work.

The real star of the show, however, is Adam himself. English has fashioned a decidedly complicated lead who, despite showing monstrous origins, actually comes with a good deal of heart. The plot's pretty interesting as well; it involves a pursuit after some rogue scientist with a flair for the macabre. The plot thickens in suspense with each turn or surprises the story takes until the considerably satisfying ending.

Now, there are a few small problems. If you are scared easily or like your mysteries uncomplicated, this isn't the book for you. She almost skimmed a bit thin on world-building concerning the League of Supernatural Hunters; there are moments when it feels like there may be some developmental potential left to be seen in future entries.

These are minor quibbles, however. "The Deadly Pieces" is still very much a winner. The new spin on Frankenstein—the exciting mystery, above all the charming dynamic between Adam and his partner—results in a great read. This is one of those one-sitting books that will get devoured by urban fantasy and supernatural whodunit fans.

In the end, "The Deadly Pieces" is genre-bending at its finest-refreshingly unique in its look at a new take on the Frankenstein myth. The mad scientist is on the loose hooks from square one and doesn't turn too soft. So phenomenal was Adam Frankenstein as a hero—a complicated yet astoundingly relatable man of his monstrous origins. Interest is further added by contrasting personalities from the supporting cast, most particularly his partner Rebecca. Although the world-building does leave some room to be rounded out, the plot otherwise stays tight and sprinkled with interesting characters that more than make up for it. With its brilliant writing, editing, and genre-bending twists, "The Deadly Pieces" is, without question, a must-read for any fan of supernatural fiction: without question, 5 stars out of 5.
