Nico is a jovial, sulphur-crested cockatoo who lives as a pet with Kim and her mother. Kim started going to school, which didn’t bother Nico too much. But when the summer holiday came, it became an issue for him, as he stopped being bubbly or even eating. Kim takes him to the flower shop with her mom, so he can feel much better. “NICO” by Marlene Rattigan is an interesting children’s book that teaches a lot of values to kids, such as kindness, love, and compassion. Through this book, they’ll get to understand the importance of taking care of their pets. This book is evidence that, like humans, pets too feel lonely and can sink into depression. Nico felt neglected and lost a lot of weight in the process, and it is a good thing Kim noticed this on time. I also enjoyed the rich illustrations in the book, as kids will find them extremely appealing and engaging. The storyline is fun to read and even contains some elements of suspense.

There’s nothing negative to say about this book. It is quite educational because, at the end of the book, the author gives a brief summary of Nico’s kind of breed. Children who read this book may even have the desire to own a pet, and through this, they'll learn how to be more compassionate. There are no errors in this book, and I find it to be flawlessly edited. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars, as it deserves a perfect rating.

This book is recommended for kids between the ages of 3 and 9, as they would enjoy looking across the illustrative pictures. They will also get to learn things about cockatoos and how to take care of pets.
