The book First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough by Mark Unger is about a young child’s battle with stage four neuroblastoma. Louis Unger was three years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. His father, Mark Unger, writes about his son’s battle against cancer. Throughout the book, Mark talks about his son’s treatments, doctor appointments, and conversations with healthcare professionals. Mark and his wife do their best to advocate for their son, which helped pave the way for patient advocacy today. Although Mark talks about his son Louis, he also talks about how this battle has been affecting his family. He writes about his son Harry, who misses playing with his brother and being with his family. He also talks about how his wife does her best to care for Louis and be there for Harry when he needs her. Mark also added photos of his son Louis and family at specific moments in Louis’ battle against cancer.
Overall, I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5. While reading this book, I loved how personal the story was. I loved how the author of the book was the father and how he included every detail of his son’s illness and the treatments he received. I also liked how the author mentions his conversations with doctors and the options these doctors were giving to the family. The author does a great job of talking about the struggles and feelings within his family. Even though there were a couple of errors in the book, I still give the book the rating I think it deserves. I highly recommend this book to those who are seeking information on those who have been diagnosed with neuroblastoma or know of someone who has been affected by this disease. I believe that this book would help those who feel helpless and need inspiration in battling against cancer. All in all, I enjoyed the book and will reread it again in the future.
