Unconscionable by Charles R. Butts, Jr., is a compelling novel highlighting racial injustices in rural Georgia. Peter Crawford was hunting with his son, Benny, when they found a dead body in a field. The victim is a young, Black man and the injuries are horrific. The victim was beaten and stabbed repeatedly. Initial evidence indicated that his body was chained to a vehicle and dragged before being dumped in the field. When they called the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department, three deputies arrived at the crime scene. When the Sheriff arrived at the scene, he gave confusing orders that jeopardized the investigation.

Johnny Lee Grier was a young, Black man who was dating a white girl named Francine. They were deeply in love and planning their future together when Johnny Lee went missing. His mother, Gracie, became alarmed when he did not return home one night. She contacted the police to file a missing person report, but they showed indifference and a lack of concern for her missing son. She was desperate to find any information she could about her son. Eventually, her search led her to call hospitals and the morgue hoping for answers. Could Johnny Lee be the unidentified body found by the hunters in the field?

This book tells a tragic story about racial injustices and senseless acts of violence. The mishandling of a murder case by racist men in authority and the quest to find justice for a life that ended too soon are themes that will keep readers engaged in the story from beginning to end. The author captures the love, compassion, and grief experienced by the Grier family. They have a deep faith in God and regularly pray together as a family. They find the strength they need to seek justice in a world where it does not come easily.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the character of Gracie. Gracie is a small woman, but her strength of spirit keeps the family together. Her love for her children and her husband gives her strength and she never loses faith that justice will eventually prevail. She is multi-dimensional, and readers will relate to her strength and compassion. There was nothing that I disliked about this book.

I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The story is well-written and compelling. I recommend it to readers who enjoy reading fiction and crime novels. The Grier family has a deep faith in God and frequently prays together to gain strength to face the harsh realities they must endure. People of other religions may have different religious beliefs but will appreciate the Grier family’s values and compassion.
