All Kelly wanted was a perfect tropical honeymoon getaway with her new husband. She soon realizes her well thought out plans may just blow up in her face, literally. In EMP Honeymoon: Kelly & Tom, by Dorothy May Mercer, newlyweds Kelly and police Sergeant Tom Turbulo, find themselves in hot water when Kelly innocently stumbles upon a secret terrorist military operation while shopping for souvenirs.

After sounding the alarm bells to friends in high places, the Turbulos put together a ragtag team consisting of bodyguards and an undercover CIA agent to gather intel on a terrorist group and prevent the United States from being forced into a nuclear winter. What unfolds next is a riveting tale spanning across the globe with a dash of space travel.

In this sci-fi crime thriller, the reader stays on the edge of their seat as Mercer takes them on a tense journey to save the U.S. The book is written from the perspective of an omniscient narrator, which allows the reader to get to know each character and see how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. I particularly enjoyed this approach because I was able to connect with the characters on a deeper level, even the antagonists. This, paired with the fast-paced plot full of close calls, made it easy to stay engaged with the story. I was hesitant to read this story, as I feared the science fiction aspect may become too overly complicated, causing a disconnect with the story. I was pleasantly surprised to find my fears were erroneous. The superior editing of the book only added to the effective immersion.

The one thing that I did find a little disconcerting had to do with the subtitles in the chapters. About half way through the book, they shifted from being locations to topics and, at times, questions about what would happen next. While this is very minor, it would help with the flow of the story to stick with one or the other. Since this is such a minor detail, I still chose to give this book a rating of five out of five stars. I would recommend this book for readers from high school age to adults that enjoy fiction thrillers based on tech, politics, and international crime.
