Hachi + Araine // Awake by Michael G. Hurston is a fantasy book that immerses readers in intrigue and adventure. Hachi, a formidable Tau-born warrior, awakens alongside her golem, Araine, after a long slumber to discover a world utterly transformed. Determined to find others like herself, she sets out with new friends on a mesmerizing journey in space. This journey involves searching for her kind, confronting her inner demons, and grappling with the loss of her past. As they face the demands of this new reality, Hachi must tackle her vulnerabilities and uncover the truth about the world she now inhabits, all while facing daunting challenges.

What I liked most was the suspenseful atmosphere present on every page. As the protagonists wake up after an extended period, they (as well as the reader) have to discover a new reality. They need to learn more about themselves, their world, who they can trust, etc. This reality makes the book dynamic, with the reader wanting to know more with each paragraph. The book also presents several revolutionary aspects, such as how the protagonists communicate, which is very interesting and innovative.

However, the book has some serious problems. The first is that, in many aspects, the story seems confusing, and the reader stops to wonder what is happening. It is challenging to understand the present, the past, the different types of fantastic creatures, and the plot simultaneously. An opening chapter is needed to introduce the book more intelligently and gradually.

Another aspect that caught my attention was the absence of a relevant antagonist to make the plot more exciting. The plot becomes repetitive in many parts, with several characters having sex with each other in a way that doesn't add anything to the narrative. The book also has many grammatical errors and needs another round of editing. These are mainly punctuation errors, which give the reader an impression of amateurism.

Hachi + Araine // Awake has more flaws than virtues. Although I can see talent in the author, it is clear that he is inexperienced and needs help conveying everything he envisioned in the way he intended. Since the book has several flaws, I rate it 3 out of 5 stars. The book could be excellent after another round of editing if the author takes the constructive criticism I provided in the previous paragraphs seriously. If you like a futuristic fantasy book set in space, you might enjoy it. However, there is a lot of profane language and sexual content, so I do not recommend it to anyone under 18.

This seems like a mix of fantasy and science fiction that has good potential but needs more editing work to be properly developed and proper proofreading as well to prevent distractions while reading it. Thank you for your honest review!

This book was a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the plot was well-constructed and kept me intrigued. The characters were relatable, which made it even better.
