Review of The Boatmans Promise
Scott Bohlin's "The Boatman's Promise" is among that stack of fantasy books capable of winning readers to the genre. It is a beautiful story set in a world where aspects of mythology and history mix in, following an attractive protagonist, a young woman named Segen, who mourns the loss of her family and finds herself kidnapped into an illegitimate quest to save a kingdom.
The novel's world-building is spectacular, with a more developed tapestry of ancient gods, demons, and mythical creatures. Bohlin has masterfully woven in elements of history, mythology, and religion to create a different yet fascinating setting for readers. Envisioned through the author's vivid descriptions, this world gets brought to life, immersing the readers in the story's atmosphere.
Character development is pretty good and interesting. Segen proves to be a decent heroine, as she is suffering from grief and uncertainty while trying to fulfill her destiny. Interesting supporting characters exist, such as the mighty warrior Karis and the man out of time Francis.
If I would prefer some parts of the book, then surely I would opt for the one between Segen and Karis. Their dynamics, frankly speaking, are pretty interesting and heartwarming as they face their issues and handle their tasks hand in hand. What made this book most interesting was the way the author portrayed their developing relationship. When Segen didn't want to let her guard down with Karis at first, Karis risked her own life to save Segen in a situation that could have killed her. This act of unselfish heroism helps to cement their relationship as well as ignite future joint ventures.
I must say that "The Boatman's Promise" is a great read, but there is one small flaw. In several places, parts of the book were a little too fast-paced, even a bit too close together at points. However, this doesn't take a lot away from the overall greatness of the story.
This book was edited superbly. No errors and typos crept into my mind as I went through it. Nonetheless, I must warn that the book uses rather explicit language and profanity. Consider it before reading.
Overall, "The Boatman's Promise" is a must-read for fans of fantasy and is a compelling story that will linger within the mind long after that final page is read. I give it 5 out of 5 stars, as nothing seems to bring the stars down in this book. Overall, the characters, world-building, and plot were all exciting reads that had me flipping through the pages.
