“Teacher” by Robert Mitchell is a memoir that recounts the author’s experiences in different schools. This helped him find his own pathway in seeking his personal, vocational archetype. He also learned to rely on his passion, intellect and experience to try out various approaches in order to make courses stimulating and educating. Furthermore, Robert asserts that World History class made him understand a teacher’s role in nurturing the soul of children.

I like how the author specifically gives his comments about the structures of the course outlines in various subjects, such as English literature, geometry, and so on. Again, I like the answer he gave one of his students when questioned about the relevance of history in modern times. He avoids giving a standard answer to this but took his time to explain that everyone is connected to history, which makes its study important.

I equally learnt of the importance of keeping in touch with one’s ancestral heritage. The author’s experience in one of the high schools made him realise teaching is not just a job but a commitment to children and their parents. Robert also has a point in the distinction made between teachers with a calling, i.e., good and proficient ones, and those who only look at it as a professional job and make no attempt to connect with the students.

I believe the author sufficiently outlined his teaching experiences, which will be highly beneficial to teachers already in the profession and those who wish to venture into it as a career. In lieu of this, I don’t have anything negative to say about the book, and it is also error-free. Putting these reasons into consideration, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. It is a good recommendation to teachers at large, as the lessons learned from this book will help them engage and flow along with students better.
