Review of A Single Touch
A Single Touch by Maryjane Spillane is an adult fiction book following the romantic escapades of Marie. Throughout the novel, Marie explores her sexuality and pursues physical stimulation from various partners.
After a day working at a data-entry company, Marie goes on a night out with her colleagues. Marie is a 19-year-old virgin who is keen to begin her sexual evolution. Nick, an Italian stallion, is enjoying a night out at the same bar and approaches Marie and gives her his number. Marie and Nick enjoy a few dates before Marie loses her virginity to Nick in his sports car. Marie has sex with Nick multiple times and is mesmerised by the power she has over his body. Marie continues a relationship with Nick for a short while until she becomes bored of the mundane routine. Marie sets her sights on more excitement, with no strings attached, and begins her education in sex.
The story describes a woman’s journey into physical intimacy. The author has created a character you can relate to because most people experience an individual sexual development that comes with maturity. The book includes familiar thoughts and feelings, excitement, apprehension, and curiosity, and holds no bars expressing desire. The dialogue expresses free and open sexual language with a focus on female enjoyment of sex, with and without romantic attachment.
Because the book focuses on multiple sexual encounters, there is very little depth of character or character development. There is very little in the way of storytelling, more of an account of many fleeting sexual encounters. Although the erotic encounters are entertaining, they become repetitive as the book progresses. I felt I hadn’t read a gripping storyline, and the book left little impression on me. The language is sexually explicit, and the scenes described are graphic. I believe the book will only be suited to readers who enjoy erotic fiction and who are not offended by the language. As an open-minded reader, I found some parts of the book titillating, but equally, some parts too extreme.
In conclusion, the book lacked an engaging story and interesting characters. I became disinterested in the numerous sexual escapades of the principal character, and the prolific sexual content became tedious. The sexual development of the character is relatable, and the story displays how you develop technique through maturity and practice. I found portions of the book entertaining that covered many different sexual situations. The book is well-edited. I rate it 2 out of 5 stars because I found more to dislike about the book than I liked. For such a provocative genre, the book disappoints with a lack of an engaging story and intriguing characters.
