Review of The sudden sanction
The Sudden Sanction by Thomas Anthony Montoya Sr. is a story about a cowboy named Sam Sudden who was on his way to Ben Bradley's ranch in Texas, hoping to find work mending fences. He stops at a saloon for food and beer for himself and his dog, Bully. After Mike Flint starts a fight with him, Sam accidentally kills him when he hits his head on the bar edge. It turns out that Mike's real name is Richard Hambro, an outlaw with a $600 bounty on him. Henry Stubbs, Joshua Miller, Paco Garcia, and Jerry Moyer come into the saloon, and Henry gets upset when they hear about Mike. After a saloon girl named Rose points Sam out to him, he attempts to shoot Sam, but Sam is faster and kills him. Joshua, Paco, and Jerry leave the saloon before Sheriff Leo Baker notices them. It turns out that Henry's real name is Charles Hambro, and he and Richard are brothers. Charles also has a bounty of $500 on his head, which Sam collects. Will Sam decide it is easier to earn money by being a bounty hunter, or will he continue his journey to Ben Bradley's ranch and his solitary life mending fences? Will Sam encounter Joshua, Paco, and Jerry again?
Sam and his beer-drinking dog, Bully, were two of my favorite characters in this book. Sam is portrayed as a loner who has given up on people but has remained polite, friendly, and caring about others. His mule, Geraldine, and Bully were always well taken care of. Bully always seemed to enjoy the same food that Sam ate, especially the beer. This book met my expectations for a Western with saloons, saloon girls, a town festival, bank robberies, outlaws, and gunfights. There was never a dull moment in this action-packed and suspenseful storyline. The festival activities, such as sack races, bobbing for apples, pie-eating contests, games, and booths, to name a few, were easy to visualize and were comparable to the festivals I attended in my youth.
The only negative aspect of this book that needs improvement is the editing. A round of professional editing would have allowed me to give this fast-paced book a perfect score. Although the number of errors did not distract from my reading enjoyment, I had to deduct one star and give it 4 out of 5 stars due to the number of them. I hope the author continues Sam's journey in future books since this one ended in a cliffhanger that left me with many questions.
Fans of stories about cowboys and outlaws who do not mind non-borderline profanity will not be disappointed with this book. Readers of all religious or non-religious beliefs are appropriate for this book because the minor religious content does not push any particular religious faith on the reader.
