Review of Recollections of Thad Morgan
Recollections of Thad Morgan The Man Who Could Make God Cuss...And Laugh is a biography of Thad Morgan edited by Jim Reese. This book tells the story of a man who commanded fear and respect yet was a man who led a loving, caring, and impactful life. The first impression people have when they first meet the man, Thad Morgan, is that he is a grouchy, authoritative, and grumpy old man who likes to nag and cuss people out. The book explores the life of this man as a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent based on the experiences of different people who have encountered him. Three things stand out from the entire life story of this legend. Firstly, he loves and enjoys cursing. Then, he absolutely loves his football team, the Wildcats, with all his life, and lastly, he is compassionate to people around him, particularly to children with special needs.
This book teaches us that a life well led is a life that impacts those around us positively. This is captured by the heartfelt tributes and appreciation a lot of people wrote for Thad Morgan. I loved the unique form of writing, making every story contained in the book authentic. However, there was no chronological narration of the various events in the book. This is excusable, though, as the narration is based on how the various contributors remember the events. Another issue is that it felt like reading the same thing in different words. Most of the stories are similar, if not the same, and there was too much profanity in the book, even though I did not mind. These issues influenced me to remove two stars from my rating, and I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. I felt that despite the fact that the bulk of the contributors are those who have worked for or with him, his personal life at home and church should have been explored to give this book more balance.
