Maggie Fleming's The Art of Entertaining is a practical, thoughtful book about social entertaining and being a gracious host or guest at social parties. For tailgates and home parties, weddings, birthday parties, and holiday entertaining the book has good advice on how to make any party a success and fun for guests and hosts. The advice is straightforward, so it's ideal for anyone who wishes to improve their social etiquette and party planning.

Most impressive perhaps is the visual attractiveness of the book. High-quality images, elegant type, and vibrant colors are all combined to create a book that is a pleasure to hold and readily read. Well-placed boxes summarizing key points make the book readable so that readers can quickly pick up important information at a glance.

Fleming organizes the book well, with a single kind of event in a chapter. At the end of each chapter, she lays down such standout elements as norms to host, obligations of the guests, suggestions on decoration, and planning of food. Professionalism is evident through sensible advice properly explained and applicable.

The most interesting aspect of the book is that it promotes social etiquette. Fleming gives sound advice on receiving and sending invitations, choosing the right gifts, and being polite with other company guests. Such advice can make readers confident in society and steer them away from mistakes.

The second side of personal touch is that party advice is just as pet-friendly. Fleming recognizes pets as gigantic parts of human life and offers considerate advice on how to involve them at parties without sacrificing comfort or decency. Although written about dogs, tips from cat people can easily be translated.

Nothing less than brilliant, The Art of Entertaining is so excellent that it is worth every single 5-star that it has received. I would highly recommend this book to anyone willing to advance the art of hosting or learn what manners are required to be a polite guest.
