Do you write reviews?

Do you write book reviews? Why do you write them; is it for friends, on a blog, for pay, etc?

Yes, and I do it for friends and for pay, but not for blogs, though I probably should. SOmetimes, I do it for fun and to stay sharp.

Yes I do, mainly because I have a bad memory for plots, and have even found myself at the end of a novel realising that I've read it before! There's no way I could keep track of all the Agatha Christie's I've read if I didn't list and review them.
Reviewing the books I read also helps when I go to second-hand book sales or car-boots; it prevents me from purchasing authors which my reviews have labelled "don't bother with this author again" or "for the charity shop again".
So these reviews are for purely personal reasons. Oh, and it helps for when a friend mentions a book I've read, I can refer to the review and say: "oh yes, I remember that one. I wasn't fond of it, it was full of hyperbole. Everything was 'exciting' and 'wonderful' and happened 'out of the blue'" or whatever I've written.
My most recent review was of 'The Swiss Family Robinson':
"The endless footnotes became tiresome, especially as they concerned
things familiar to a modern reader. I started to skip these.
And the end was overly contrived. At a stroke of his pen, females
arrived to their place - perfect matches for two of his sons to breed
another generaion. Even the fact that the narrative is in the reader's
hands is neatly explained: two of the sons leave with the the ship,
taking with them the MSS."
This is a mere extract of the waffle I scribbled. It helps me to sort out my feelings about a novel, and to remember what I've read!

I review them for friends and online forums, and I also am on several publisher's reviewers lists. It's a great way to get free books - go to publishers websites and see if they have a programme for reader reviews. You get pre-published copies that you have a set date to review them by. I've received quite a few books that way.

I review them for a blog I have set up so that I can try to encourage others to read.

I have written reviews for several years now, and they have been published in thousands of online and print magazines. These days I specialize in Occult novels and dark urban fantasy novels.

In fact, I love these books so much I just created a blog for my recent reviews last week. The purpose of the blog is to help people who are just starting a private collection of contemporary Occult novels. So far I have reviewed several series on the blog that I think are essential for collectors and fans of this genre.

I do too - it helps me remember what I've read, and (hopefully) I can also inspire someone to pick up something good (or stay away from something just awful--there's been a bit of that recently  )

Oooooer! I am gonna have to check that out. I have been staying away from the darker stuff like serial killers because it was making me a bit on the freaky side, who knows when I will get back to it, but this would be good!

I just checked that one out on Amazon. I have never read Nora Roberts because I thought she was a romance writer, and I'm not a big fan of romance books. Is this series a romance series? If not, I'll put it on my TBR list, because it looks like one I would enjoy. Thanks for the tip!

Laura Nora Roberts is a bit across several genres. She's a very adventurous author, she'll have a go at all kinds of styles and genres, I admire that in her!

Yes, I do reviews for newer authors that are on my website and also for any books that I read so it will help my favorite authors and other readers.
