Shooting Bogies by Ralph Monti has many unique characters and an intriguing plot of twists and turns, golf, and the mafia. The story centers around Rocky Delmonico, a New Jersey native who has always lived on the fringe of the mob. He is single and still lives with his mother in the house where he grew up. His grandmother and mother’s influence of using talismans and holy objects for luck and to ward off evil has made an impact on Rocky’s life.

Rocky makes the mistake of laughing at a funeral after watching the widow jump onto the casket. The funeral happens to be for the father of a local New Jersey wise guy named Gino Loffaccio. Rocky has managed to keep his head down most of his life so as not to get drawn fully into the world of the mafia. This mistake makes him indebted to Gino and Gino’s mother, who has quite a reputation in the neighborhood. To get out from under Gino’s lens, Rocky is required to do him a favor. Rocky has made a living out of scamming people on the golf course. To make amends to Gino, Rocky must become the golf pro at a course that Gino wants to acquire, but Rocky needs to get information from the current owner about his plans for the course.

I enjoyed this book for all the quirky characters and details. I have experience with golfing terms and ideas, so it was easy to follow these details. The description of Gino’s mother was very detailed and easy to visualize. The witty childhood stories add to the entertainment and make the characters more authentic and believable. There was a surprising scene of a hit, but I cannot give away the plot. It is unique.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves intrigue. The story is superbly professionally edited with no grammatical errors, which makes it easy to read. I cannot name anything about the book that I did not like. I am rating Shooting Bogies by Ralph Monti 5 out of 5 stars for the above-mentioned reasons. It is very entertaining.
