What are the boxes in book I'm reviewing?

The Kindle book I'm reviewing has boxes every now and then throughout the book.
Does anyone know what the boxes are for?

They look a bit like this but they are squares (I couldn't insert squares here):

“Second door on the left [].[].[].[]. help yourself.”
