Review of The Advent of Time
The book "Advent of Time" by Indignus Servus is a deep dive into the age-old question, "Why would a loving God allow humans to go through so much suffering, adversity, anguish, and experiences of evil?"
The reasoning for the author's answer relies heavily on faith-based assumptions. Much of the information is ecclesiastical, taken from Christian Orthodoxy, the "Catechism of the Catholic Church. Other information is drawn from various studies and includes quotes from different books. This does bring in many interesting ideas and information.
Indignus Servus theorizes that man's experience before the "fall" was a "timeless existence." The explanation for the transition from timelessness to time is complex. It suggests that while the world is filled with pain and suffering, God remains fundamentally good.
One of the premises is that each person is responsible for their own actions; therefore, evil can be brought into the equation because the human being is refusing to be a loving, caring individual and instead chooses to be wicked.
There is also a springing-off point from "Original Sin" that is included in the theory, somehow involving the presence of evil as an essential way for humans to grow, change, and learn spiritual lessons.
One of my favorite parts of the book is the importance of loving relationships. That having loving people in our lives is far more important than money, fame, or sex. The argument is put forth that we must act selflessly toward one another and be willing to have some level of self-sacrifice to be in a true loving relationship.
I found the explanation of why an "all-powerful" God uses restraints and makes choices, as humans do, to be plausible. That "there is a difference between the existence of power and the exercise of power." I found this statement to be extremely interesting.
One thought brought forth in this book is that for us to have great love for God, we will be tested. We can expect the tests to be excruciating because that is how our love will expand.
One of the things that I found to be inconsistent is that the title of the book states, "The Advent of Time: A SOLUTION to the Problem of Evil Based on the Prerequisites of Love and an Analysis of Timeless Being”. The book does not actually provide a definitive "solution" to this problem instead it gives ideas and theories about why there is evil in this world that is governed by a loving God, rather than an actual resolution of the problem.
Although the book might be a little difficult for the average person to comprehend, it is very interesting and enjoyable, and the editing is impeccable. I give this book a 4 out of 5 rating. I do recommend this book as an interesting, well-thought-out read.
