Superhighway by Alex Fayman

We are all dreaming of a fast way to get to wherever we would like to go. If we can just close our eyes, think of that place and with the snap our fingers we’re already there, then things wouldn’t be so hard.

Superhighway by Alex Fayman is part of a sci-fi series about a young man bestowed with a peculiar ability to travel the world like the speed of light. Abandoned when he was still a baby, Alexander Fine, grew up in an orphanage where he was taken care of by the administrator Ms. Jenkins. Just like all orphaned kids, Alex sought for love and care from a family he can call his own. Once, he was adopted by a couple whose marriage was on the verge of sinking, and that is when he was first introduced to the world of computers and internet. He felt a force he couldn’t resist, tugging him to it. He was very unfortunate though when it comes to finding a family that lasts because every time he had to be returned like a damaged product.

As he grew up, he gave up about the idea of finding a perfect home for himself. Luckily, he was gifted with looks and intelligence so he focused his energy on the good things. Years after, though a little late, their orphanage finally acquired computers for the use of the kids. As he again felt the tug towards the gravitational pull of the internet, he discovered that he and the entwined web has a special connection, even more than that. As he was fixing the cables behind one computer one night, he got sucked into the internal world of the entangled web and found out that he could travel to any place he willed as long as there is an internet connection. Join Alex as he uncovers the strength of his ability and his past.

Written in the first person perspective, it was a very engaging read for me. An adventurous book, which made me dream of Hawaii, Amsterdam and all the places I wanted to go to. The plotline is very interesting as this is the first book I read about such thing. It was easy to follow, understandable and smooth in its transition of thoughts. It was a creative fictional realization of the one thing internet can actually do figuratively. This book thrilled me as I moved on to the next chapters. It was a page-turner. I got pulled into the story, much like how the main character was pulled by the force of the internet.

I loved reading about Alex’s orphanage life. You can feel the longing he has over the things that he was deprived of. There was a nice pace with the way the author laid out Alex’s life from when he was still a child until he grew up. It was detailed however it was not too much; it was informative but not in a boring way. Despite the fact of having a supernatural ability, he was not the perfect superhero. I liked the fact that the story voiced out the pros and cons of Alex’s ability. The character still had human emotions, he had fears and encountered problems which he had to deal with. Those things made it seem more real and less fictional despite the fact that it is impossible to happen in real life.

The book has minor errors like missing words and typographical ones which didn’t have a big impact on my reading. It was almost perfectly and professionally edited.

This book is highly recommended to readers who love a good sci-fi adventure. Teenagers and the action lovers would find Alex’s adventure exciting. I would suggest guidance for the junior readers who opt to read this because of the mention of drugs and alcohol. This book somehow used robbery and the hacking system to fuel the story’s plot which is another concern for the young ones. Though the goal is to help people, it is still not a good thing to inculcate to young readers the idea of stealing from others.

Nevertheless, I give this book a rate of 4 out of 4 stars. It was a thrilling ride to join Alex on his quest inside the massive spider web of the internet. He had my heart racing on as he ventured out into the internet’s superhighway path.
