Canadian Authors - Why so good?

Post by MatDatPhatKat »

Hi, this is my 1st post. I'm new to the site. I'm just about to finish Margaret Atwood's 'The Blind Assassin'. An amazing love story cushioned in Atwood's outstanding prose style.
I've read a few by Atwood, and I've read all of Douglas Coupland. Both Canadian, both brilliant authors. Does anyone else have any comments in this regard, or know of any other good Canadian authors?

Atwood is superb , The Handmaid's Tale is one of the best books I have read.

I don't necessarily note the nationality of an author so I may have read other Canadian authors without being aware of it .... I have Anne Michaels on my TBR list & I know she's Canadian

Do you recommend Douglas Coupland?

The Handmaid's Tale is the next on my list! I've also read Year of the Flood (I think that's what it's called). Have you read The Blind Assassin? Very moving once it gets properly started.
Douglas Coupland is a fantastic quirky author with a strange imagination. You should try 'Girlfriend in a Coma' for starters and then move on to his other stuff. I promise you won't be disappointed.
I'd draw a comparison between these 2 authors (beyond their nationality) because both are prepared to go 'off piste' with their story-telling. They edge into the realms of sci-fi and fantasy, but neither would ever be constrained by such pigeon-holing. Both have books with sci-fi/fantasy elements, but both also write excellent stuff firmly grounded in reality.
Thanks for pointing me in the direction of Anne Michaels. I'll check her out. If you're ever struggling for ideas, I can recommend Jeff Long and David Mitchell as 2 great authors. The Descent by Jeff Long remains one of my favourite books of all time.

Atwood can be the representative of Canadian writers. I only heard about her but not start reading her works yet.

Another great author that I am absolutely in love with and have read most, if not all of his novels, is Tom King. He writes beautifully and can tell quite a captivating story. My favourite one of his is Green Grass, Running Water. This is a fabulous Native Canadian writer who, in this novel, intertwines traditional folklore and the Genesis to create lovable characters and an entertaining read.
