First time I've ever written anything

Post by Fleaaaaaa »

I have tried to start a novel I got the beginnings of my first chapter but I don't actually have a plan yet. I know the basic idea of what my story is but I'm not sure where to take the character, how his journey should map out exactly.

I can post what I wrote if that helps and tell you a bit of what it's meant to be.

Have you tried writing some short stories before starting your novel? You can use the same characters to help you develop and learn more about them.

I find that if I plan too much before writing I stifle myself and stick too closely to the outline.

No I haven't written a short story before, maybe that is a good idea. I was only intending this to be a very short novel though maybe of one hundred pages or a little more or maybe less? It's because to me this story I have in mind is more about the thought process in the mind of the character rather than being a novel with a lot of great movement and plot points. Like I said I have only written a tiny bit and it isn't quite a full picture in my mind yet.

Start with that then, and just write. You never know how long it will end up if you just keep writing. I started a short story a few days ago, and it ended up being 6,000 words, much longer than I had intended. I could probably take this story in itself and turn it into something much longer, probably a short novel, but instead I'm trying to shorten it so it can be published to my blog.

Good luck with your writing. I hope to see some of it on the forum soon.
