A Bloody Book by Chris Bowen is written in the style of a writing assignment by Maxx, an eighth grader, about the moment he stopped caring. Throughout this book, we learn about Maxx’s home and school life and the troubles he has. He documents his time in “Reading Hell”, and the other students in his class, along with his new teacher, Mr. Foxx. Mr.Foxx is straightforward and encourages the kids to speak up in a way that is different than the teachers before him. He treats the students like people, rather than young children. As the story progresses, we find out about Maxx’s family and the events that led him to become who he is. The themes of death, drugs, neglect, and, as promised, blood are all explored in this novel.

There were so many aspects of this book that I enjoyed. The writing style is great, it was very interesting, and I was hooked into the story. There was one particularly intense scene that was absolutely fantastic and very well written. Also, the plot twist at the end was very unexpected. Most of the characters were very likable and developed throughout the story. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

There were very few things that I disliked about this book. The only things I can think of is that it was sometimes slow-paced, but even so, it eventually picked back up again. The only mistake I noticed was on page 118, the word “flower” was used instead of “flour”. I had no reason to dislike this book.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It dealt with serious topics, such as drug abuse, in an interesting and thought-provoking way. There were many unexpected parts that took me by surprise. In addition, the characters were well written and seemed like real people. You could connect to many of the characters issues and you really felt bad for what they were going through. Also, there were next to no errors that I could see. So, this book is totally deserving of this rating.

This book would appeal to teenagers who want to read about more serious topics in a compelling way. It would also catch the interest of people who enjoy books about school or books with major plot twists. This is not the type of novel who prefer light-hearted stories. In conclusion, this book was a pleasure to read and I would recommend it to people who like the types of books listed above.
