James Hadley Chase

Post by Diy-day »

Has anyone else read this man's books? They used to be - and might still be - huge in Great Britain and commonwealth countries (e.g., Nigeria, India), not so much in the US where I live now. I read many of his books (over 75), when I was in high school, and I even kept a running list of all of his works I'd read. Maybe you know him by another name, because he had several aliases:

Rene Brabazon Raymond
James L. Docherty
Ambrose Grant
Raymond Marshall

If you have read any of his books, what are your favorites?

Blast from the past! Particularly as the dear man passed away in 1985. I remember reading his books when I was young. His work was heavily influences by American crime novels (he often used gangster themes) which earned him a good reputation in the thriller genre. I remember a private investigator, and a CIA agent too, but he wrote a trilogy with card-playing titles about a woman named Helga which I enjoyed so I'd have to say that was probably my favourite.

No Orchids for Miss Blandish is my favorite James Hadley Chase novel. I was completely unaware of his work until a friend who knew of my interest in hardboiled, noir and old time pulp fiction crime novels brought him to my attention. I've since read several of his novels and greatly enjoy his writing.

Hadley Chase was quite popular in Nigeria when I was growing up. Right now the boys read practically nothing at all except few who read motivationals. The girls are active but seriously into erotica and good local books. I enjoyed his books like CADE, AN EAR TO THE GROUND and all of the series that had Mark Girland(actually my own James Bond) and Helga Rolfe in it.
