TITLE: THE MYSTERY OF FLIGHT 2222
AUTHOR: THOMAS NEVIASER

It has been said time and time again that there is no escaping the law of karma. Oftentimes when we play the game of life, life will eventually play on us.

The book depicts the story of two complete strangers who met each other on a USA flight 2222 going to Argentina.
The long flight is the setting of the book where the readers will be introduced to the two main characters, Frank Mason and Helen Hampton.

Frank is a corporate executive, married to Kate Mason, who is expecting their first child. His job requires him to do a lot of travelling. There was some uneasiness on the part of Kate when told about this trip. For one she is already heavily pregnant and the thought of Frank being away for an unscheduled business travel did not quite sit well with her. But being the dutiful wife that she is, she made sure that Frank’s needs were properly packed and lovingly sent him her well wishes.

Helen Hampton is a businesswoman. She is divorced from her husband Ricardo. Having learned that Ricardo’s mother passed away, her self -perceived guilt towards their family drove her to take the next available flight to Argentina to pay her final respects to the deceased.

On board USA Flight 2222, Frank and Helen were seated next each other. Frank sensed that Helen was quite tense and nervous for the long flight so he tried to make her at ease by some small talks. Later on when Helen was a little more comfortable, he introduced her to a game he usually plays by himself. Frank told Helen how the game is played. They will choose seven passengers and guess about their names, jobs, personalities and discuss about their life story. So instead of just reading a book or watching a movie, the game allowed them to be story tellers and Helen found the game quite entertaining and helped her to relax a bit.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck. The plane began experiencing engine troubles and some explosions occurred.

The plane crash brought the survivors on a raft in the middle of the sea with no land in sight, mysteriously Frank and Helen and the seven passengers they chose for their game as among the survivors.

The following chapters present the harrowing experiences of the survivors. Here, the author transports his readers perceptively to the depths of human frailties, desperation and defiance in the face of his survival. The vivid imagery the author presented while the survivors were on the ocean battling the storms, heat waves and the mammals preying on them, were so engrossing and were packed with a lot of action and suspense .

The novel also provided its readers with enlightening thoughts and philosophical questions. Do we stop being humans when faced with limited means to survive tragedies? Do we deserve horrible afflictions because of our wickedness? Are we all just mere pawns in this game called life? For this I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

I highly recommend this book for the avid fans of action, suspense and mystery genre. With its controversial ending, book club members looking for insightful read may also find this novel an interesting one to discuss on their next meeting.
